What is Plasma Pen Treatment?

Plasma Pen Treatment is a modern and cutting-edge procedure that utilizes advanced and highly focused plasma energy.

Plasma is a special ionised gas that has an electrical charge, and when it is applied with either low or high atmospheric pressure, it can be utilized to treat a variety of skin complaints, conditions, and concerns.

There are bursts of plasma between your skin and the pen, to produce micro-millimetre dots.

An expert surgeon can then place a number of these incredibly small dots strategically in a specific area of skin to achieve the desired results.

For example, it has been proven to be effective at regenerating skin tissue.

Furthermore, plasma can increase the elasticity and production of collagen in the skin, while reducing wrinkles the problematic production of oil and over pigmentation.

How long does plasma pen treatment last?

Although the results of this procedure are only temporary, with the right healthy skincare and maintenance routine, you can still expect the results of plasma pen treatment to last as much as 3 years.

Many of the contributory factors involved in reducing how long the results last include things like poor skincare, diet, and sun damage.

It is also thought, though, that ageing, and genetics could interfere with how long the effects of this type of skin tightening last.

Does the plasma pen work?

We can only really offer our thoughts based on the results we have seen with patients who have had the treatment.

Most have experienced great results and have only positive things to say about the entire process.

Perhaps the most difficult part of Plasma Pen treatment is that you need to exercise patience when waiting to see the results, as it can take as long as 12 weeks for the results.

The reason this takes so long is that the collagen needs time to develop.

How Long Do Plasma Pen Treatment Sessions Take to Complete?

As it depends on the area and the severity of the area where you are having the procedure done, it is hard to pinpoint the exact duration for each session.

You can expect, though, for it to take approximately between 10 and 40 minutes to complete.

How Many Plasma Pen Treatments Are Necessary?

It really depends on the condition of your skin, the particular areas that need to be treated and how severe they are.

Often, patients just need one session of plasma pen treatment, but it is better to plan for 2 to 3 sessions of treatment.

For a more accurate idea of how many treatments you will need, the surgeon assigned to perform your treatment will discuss this during your initial consultation appointment.

What Are the Potential Risks of Plasma Pen Treatment?

As we’ve already noted, there is little to no chance of this procedure causing serious damage, because it is non-surgical, non-invasive and the fact we use the special Accord device that doesn’t even come into contact with the skin at all.

Generally speaking, the most patients tend to feel is a mild sunburn sensation.

However, with any procedure, even non-surgical options, there are always some risks that you need to be aware of, such as:

Scarring
Skin discolouration
Crusting and scabbing
Bruising and swelling

Is plasma pen better than Botox?
You may be wondering, and justifiably, as both are temporary and non-surgical measures, which is better, Botox or plasma pen treatment.

Although it is a close-run thing, whereas the positive results of Botox only tend to last for a few months, the results achieved by plasma pen treatment can last as much as 3 years.

Some common questions we get asked about plasma pen treatment

Does the plasma pen hurt?

As the treatment is non-surgical and non-invasive, generally most people will find it a pain-free experience, as a special numbing agent is used before the procedure begins. However, it depends on your sensitivity levels and pain threshold, as these are different for everyone. We have also seen that some areas are more sensitive to the effects of the plasma pen treatment than others.

Is There Any Downtime After Plasma Pen Treatment?

Although it may make you think of specific periods of time, the phrase downtime is highly subjective, relative and again, very much dependant on the area of the body treated and how severe it was.

For most people, we have found, there is little to no noticeable downtime. It doesn’t prevent you from going back to work and continuing your life as normal.

However, while the skin heals, you are expected to take extra care of it, particularly by keeping your skin out of the sun where possible for at least 6 to 12 weeks and using a lotion that has an SPF 50 or higher.

Who Will I See During My Consultation?

Linia’s london-based skin clinic is run by the Medical Director, Dr Simon Zokaie, BSc MBChB MRCP.

Qualifying from the University of Manchester in 2003, he then underwent his medical training in London. He gained membership to the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and subsequently spent over four years training in dermatology.

He has practised cosmetic dermatology since and offers his patients a variety of non and minimally invasive treatments to improve the appearance of their skin and to minimise the visible effects of premature skin ageing.

Dr Zokaie will listen to your needs during the consultation and, depending on the best course of action for you, will recommend a suitable treatment. These may include but aren’t limited to topical products, anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers to add volume to parts of the skin, including the lips and cheeks, and lasers, which tighten the skin on the face, jawline and submental area to smooth away wrinkles.
