Treatment for Psoriasis with the Linia Skin Clinic
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis affects around 1 in 50 people in the UK and can start at any age. Most often, psoriasis develops in adults between the ages of 20 and 30 and between 50 and 60 years of age.
Psoriasis is a common inflammatory disease affecting the skin, scalp, nails, and joints. It is known to be a chronic condition and those suffering can experience ongoing flare ups, with long-term symptoms.
A change in your immune health, hormonal fluctuations, stress, anxiety, alcohol, intense sunlight, or injury to the skin, are just some examples of triggers.

How to recognise symptoms of Psoriasis?
Psoriasis can be identified as raised ‘plaques’ on the skin, which can be itchy, scaly, flaky, and red in colour. The rash can appear darker in colour depending on a person’s skin tone and complexion and areas of silvery-white scales can be present.
It does not scar the skin, although it can be known to cause a temporary increase or reduction in skin colour. Psoriasis can be painful and if found on the body, painful fissures (cracks) can develop and bleed.
There are several types of psoriasis, the most common being Chronic Plaque Psoriasis, which is typically present on the knees, elbows, trunk, scalp, behind the ears and between the buttocks, although other areas can be involved too.
Linia Skin Clinic will be able to help you identify and understand more on the type of Psoriasis you are suffering from and provide advice on how best to treat it.

What to do if you think you have Psoriasis.
Psoriasis is not infectious; you therefore cannot transmit this on to others. Moderate to severe psoriasis, however, can lead to other long-term health problems and although there is no cure for psoriasis, there are many effective treatments available.
Speak with a member of our team today, who can support you onto a path to better manage your Psoriasis and help to keep it under control.
What treatments are available for Psoriasis?
There are several approaches to help patients manage their psoriasis, from topical treatments to systemic drugs.
A topical treatment is applied directly to the skin or affected area. Common examples of topicals treatments are lotions, creams, ointments, gels, and shampoos. The aim of a topical treatment is to calm the underlying inflammation and eliminate excess scaly skin developed by Psoriasis.
If systemic medication is necessary to treat the psoriasis, your Dermatologist will discuss this with you and consider which is most appropriate in your circumstances by prescribing accordingly.
These types of medications are known to be extremely effective at controlling psoriasis but are not suitable for everyone.
How do I get help with my Psoriasis?
As an initial step, a consultation appointment will be scheduled with the Dermatologist. During this appointment, the Doctor will ask questions relating to your medical history.
A thorough assessment will take place and a confirmed diagnosis will be made. Once the Dermatologist has examined you, a personalised recommended treatment plan will be provided depending on the severity of your condition.
We can usually offer appointments within a week for new patients experiencing acute flare ups of psoriasis. Careful monitoring will be necessary and follow up reviews with the Dermatologist would be required over a period of 3 to 6 months, to ensure the condition is well managed and controlled.

Questions & Answers
Some common questions we get asked about psoriasis
Causes of Psoriasis
The development of Psoriasis is caused by both hereditary and environmental factors. Hereditary Psoriasis is complex and to this day, is still not completely understood.
If you have a family member who suffers from Psoriasis, you are at higher risk of developing the condition. The process of skin cellular turnover occurs every 21 to 28 days. With Psoriasis, this cellular process is accelerated, and the skin cells subsequently form, divide, and shed more frequently between 3 and 4 days on average.
Certain medications can trigger flare-ups, or if you suddenly stop steroid treatment, then symptoms can worsen. Smoking or being overweight can impact your response to treatment, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle alongside your treatment plan is recommended.
What are the different types of psoriasis?
There are many types of psoriasis. Some of the most common types are:
- Plaque psoriasis – This is the most common type of psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis causes dry, inflamed skin patches covered in scales. These patches, known as plaques, are usually sore and itchy. It can occur anywhere on the body, but most commonly appears on the elbows, knees and lower back.
- Nail psoriasis – In many people, psoriasis affects the nails. Nail psoriasis can cause nails to become discoloured, pitted or separated from the nail bed.
- Scalp psoriasis – This is a type of psoriasis that causes dry, itchy patches of skin on the scalp. It can cause temporary hair loss in severe cases.
- Inverse psoriasis – This form of psoriasis appears in folds of the skin, such as the armpits or groin. It causes bright red, smooth patches of skin and typically gets worse with sweating or friction.
- Guttate psoriasis – This type tends to occur in children and teenagers. Guttate psoriasis causes small, red spots on your thighs, chest, scalp and arms. It often goes away within a few weeks but can persist and potentially develop into plaque psoriasis.
Other less common types of psoriasis include: pustular psoriasis, von Zumbusch psoriasis, erythrodermic psoriasis and palmoplantar pustulosis.
Can you have more than one type of psoriasis?
Is psoriasis contagious?
Is there a cure for psoriasis?
There is no cure for psoriasis, so complete clearance is not always achievable. Some patients may experience spontaneous clearance, but the reasons for this are still unknown.
