What is Folliculitis?

Folliculitis is a common dermatological condition which affects the hair follicles and occurs due to inflammation within these tiny structures. There are many different types of folliculitis and can develop anywhere on the body where there is hair. The condition is primarily seen on the face and upper arms, although it can be found elsewhere on the body. It can be recognised as small red or dark pimples around the pocket from where each hair grows or can appear as swollen under the surface bumps. The condition can be itchy and sore, and can often have a physiological impact on a person’s self-confidence, due to its appearance.

What causes Folliculitis?

Folliculitis is usually caused by an infection with the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, within the beard hair follicles. It most commonly affects men who shave but can also occur in un-shaven beards, this is known as Folliculitis Barbae. Infection typically occurs near the skins surface, in the upper segment of the hair follicles and can cause skin irritation. In some instances, the infection can be found much deeper within the hair follicles. This type of inflammatory response causes the skin to become swollen developing uncomfortable bumps under the skins surface. If the reaction is severe, it can target adjoining hair follicles, causing larger swellings and is often mistaken for acne. This is known as Sycosis Barbae and has the potential to cause scarring. Folliculitis can be a result of daily activities such as, shaving, waxing, hot tub / jacuzzi usage and excessive sweating. Other less common causes could come down to a fungal or herpes virus infection, although this is not usually referred to as Folliculitis Barbae.

What to do if you suspect you have Folliculitis.

A physical examination will be required, to medically diagnose your symptoms and to ensure the condition is folliculitis. This would be confirmed during a dermatology consultation appointment and the Dermatologist will provide you with information on treatments available to help treat the condition. Who Will I See During My Consultation?

Linia’s london-based skin clinic is run by the Medical Director, Dr Simon Zokaie, BSc MBChB MRCP.

Qualifying from the University of Manchester in 2003, he then underwent his medical training in London. He gained membership to the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and subsequently spent over four years training in dermatology.

He has practised cosmetic dermatology since and offers his patients a variety of non and minimally invasive treatments to improve the appearance of their skin and to minimise the visible effects of premature skin ageing.

Dr Zokaie will listen to your needs during the consultation and, depending on the best course of action for you, will recommend a suitable treatment. These may include but aren’t limited to topical products, anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers to add volume to parts of the skin, including the lips and cheeks, and lasers, which tighten the skin on the face, jawline and submental area to smooth away wrinkles.

Dr Zokaie is passionate about standards in his practice and ensuring that he is at the forefront of the latest and most effective methods. Along with his day-to-day skin clinic work, he also attends as many conferences and meetings as he can.
