Moles are something that almost everyone suffers from at some point in their life. Whether they develop from an early age or later in life. Generally, they are harmless and completely normal, but that doesn’t stop many of us seeking mole removal.
They can be the cause of a lot of distress and affect your self-esteem and confidence, depending on their appearance and size.
Often, if they are very large and protrude out of the skin they can catch on clothing and cause discomfort.
As a result, you may be interested in mole removal. If you are looking at how to get rid of moles, Linia Skin can help. At our London Clinic in Harley Street, we provide treatment in the UK for cosmetic concerns, including skin and facial mole removal. Moles can be removed through shave excision or other techniques.

During this appointment, your mole will be examined to make sure it is not the result of skin cancer. After it has been examined and assessed, one of our specialists will discuss the options for mole removal and mole removal cost.
If you are concerned about the development of your mole, speak to us at LINIA Skin Clinic and we can discuss whether surgical excision is suitable or one of the other options, discussed on this page would be a better way have your mole removed.

What is the Mole Removal Treatment Procedure?
At Linia, there are a number of different mole removal techniques we use, including shave, curettage, excision and laser. Each process begins the same with a local anaesthetic being injected into the area surrounding the mole in order to provide a numbing sensation. Although the anaesthetic injection can provide slight discomfort, the procedure is completely painless!
There are similarities between the shave and excision methods. A shave involves the use of a scalpel to “shave” the mole off in layers until it is fully removed. Although stitches are not required after this method, you may find that there is a small patch of pink skin at the site of the mole.
Curettage is a method that essentially involves surgical scraping, using a curette, which is basically a spoon-shaped implement that has an incredibly sharp edge.
Excision is one of the most common forms of mole removal and involves the use of either a special set of surgical scissors or scalpel to remove all of the mole along with a small section of skin. Again, stitches are not generally necessary, but if the mole is large and set deep into your skin, the doctor performing the procedure may use some stitches to close up the wound.

How long does it take to for mole removal to heal?
The procedure may leave a slight scar after your mole has been removed, however, this isn’t usually permanent and will normally fade.
LINIA Skin Clinic ensure the procedure is convenient, with you able to return to work the same day, as the treatment usually takes between 20 to 30 minutes.
Are There Any Risks Associated with Mole Removal?
The good news is that as mole removal is generally a simple and safe procedure, there are very few risks associated with it. However, it is important to note that with any form of cosmetic surgery there is always side effects like scarring, bleeding and infection.
You can be sure, though, when you have your mole removal surgery performed by one of the expert dermatologists at Linia Skin Clinic in London, they will offer the highest standard of care.
How much does it cost to have a mole removed?
At Linia Skin Clinic we offer a range of different role removal options. It is important to note that each mole removal treatment is priced individually based on the number and the severity of them.

Mole Checks on Harley Street
According to Cancer Research, Melanoma skin cancer is the 5th most common cancer in the UK, accounting for 4% of all new cancer cases. Most skin cancers are caused by prolonged unprotected exposure to ultraviolet rays, sunburn and sunbed tanning devices. People with a fairer complexion who tend to burn, or those with freckles and/or moles are at higher risk of developing skin cancer. Melanoma skin cancer is by far the most serious and can be identified with signs of a new mole developing, or changes to size, shape, and colour of an existing mole. If you are concerned about the risks of developing skin cancer, or notice any of the above symptoms, a professional mole check and diagnosis is advised with one of our qualified Dermatologists.

What are the types of mole removal?
At Linia Skin, we offer several mole removal techniques, including shave, curettage, excision, and laser.
- A shave involves the use of a scalpel to “shave” the mole off in layers until it is fully removed. Although stitches are not required after this method, you may find that there is a small patch of pink skin at the site of the mole.
- Curettage is a method that essentially involves surgical scraping, using a curette, which is a spoon-shaped implement that has an incredibly sharp edge.
- Excision is one of the most common forms of mole removal and involves the use of either a special set of surgical scissors or scalpel to remove the mole along with a small section of skin. Again, stitches are not generally necessary, but if the mole is large and set deep into your skin, the Doctor performing the procedure may use a few stitches to close the wound.
- Laser mole removal is another method used, specifically for flat, small moles that are non-cancerous. The treatment involves light radiation bursts fired at the mole to destroy it on a tissue level. Although relatively pain free, to remove moles using this method, may require two or three sessions.

It is important to note however, that with any form of cosmetic surgery there is always the possibility of side effects such as scarring, bleeding, and infection. Your expert Dermatologist will be able to discuss this in more detail with you during your consultation. Is It OK to Cut Off a Mole?
If you are considering taking matters into your own hands and removing a mole by yourself, we would strongly urge you to reconsider. We would not recommend you try this, as it can cause various complications, including long term damage to the skin, as well as infection.
Moles are not just skin growths that have gotten out of hand. Nor can they be removed easily, like skin tags and calluses. Rather, they are pigment cell clusters, known as melanocytes, that group together into a small area to form what we know to be a mole.
Interestingly, melanocytes normally spread across the epidermal skin layer to produce your normal skin colour. When having sun exposure, these cells will try to absorb the UV radiation produced through congregating. This has the effect of preventing UV ray damage to your skin cells DNA, in turn, preventing the development of melanoma.
Generally, moles are darker areas of your skin, but not all are brown or black, with some being flesh, tan or even pink coloured and harder to spot. Compared with warts, that will bleed when you cut into them, this does not always happen when you cut moles. They tend to bleed only when they are torn away from the skin, or if you cut at the mole where it meets your skin. The main risk you face when trying to remove a mole at home is infection and scarring. There is also the problem that you won’t be able to remove all pigmented cells in their entirety as you are not a professionally qualified Dermatologist, meaning they will simply redevelop and reform darker in colour next time.
Another major problem with removing moles yourself is the risk of removing a cancerous mole because you do not have expert knowledge to tell the difference between a benign mole and cancerous one. Removing all the visible parts of a cancerous mole does not mean you have completely removed the risk of cancer and could therefore contribute to the spread of it.
Can I Get Moles Removed on NHS?
The vast majority of moles we see, are not dangerous and completely benign. It is not common practice to have benign and harmless moles removed by the NHS and patient GPs will usually refer outside of the NHS into the private sector, such as the Linia Skin Clinic. If you need further advice or recommendations, or you are worried about the possibility of your mole being cancerous, you can contact us directly, or speak with your GP as an initial step.
Is mole removal painful?
Each mole removal technique begins with a local anaesthetic being injected into the area surrounding the mole, which will provide a numbing sensation. Although the anaesthetic can provide slight discomfort upon receiving the injection, the mole removal procedure itself, is completely painless.
