Around 650 million people globally have experienced some kind of acne before, according to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence

The widespread skin condition occurs when hair follicles in the skin become blocked, leading to spots and oily or painful skin. Several factors play a part in acne development, including hormones, genetics, and environmental elements. However, one often overlooked aspect is supplements.

collection of nutritional supplements

For many people, supplements are a popular method of ensuring the body has sufficient levels of essential nutrients. But for those who are acne-prone, some supplements can irritate or interfere with the skin development, contributing to the likelihood of developing acne. Let’s explore some of the common culprits:

Protein supplements

Popular amongst the fitness community, whey protein supplements are commonly used to aid muscle recovery and growth. However, the supplement has also been associated with acne development. As well as containing essential amino acids for muscle growth, protein supplements can stimulate insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) production, which has been known to increase sebum production. Sebum is a natural oily substance produced in the skin, but excess sebum can block pores and lead to acne.

Vitamin B6/B12 supplements

The B vitamins are essential for the body’s cell functioning. Vitamin B6 plays a critical role in metabolism, immune functioning, and cognitive development, while vitamin B12 is vital for red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis, and overall iron and energy levels. Although taking vitamin B12 and/or B6 can be beneficial, the supplements have also been found to increase development of the bacteria (called Propionibacterium acnes) on the skin, which can result in inflammation that may lead to acne.

Iodine supplements

Commonly found in seafood, eggs, milk products, and some table salts, iodine is an essential mineral that helps make thyroid hormones and supports thyroid functioning. Although normal levels of iodine are not linked to skin problems, very high levels have been linked to the development of acne-like lesions in some cases. It’s believed that excess iodine is excreted through skin glands and pores, which can lead to inflammation and acne-like breakouts.

Anabolic-androgenic steroids

Commonly taken by bodybuilders and sometimes used as a form of treatment in healthcare, anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) (and other muscle building supplements which contain traces of steroids) have shown many associations with acne. Anabolic steroids increase the production of sebum, which can lead to blocked pores and in turn, acne. Steroids as such have many other side effects and should only be taken under guidance from a professional.

Reducing your risk of acne while taking supplements

Although there are some supplements more commonly associated with acne, the list above isn’t extensive and other supplements have previously been linked to skin troubles, including biotin, collagen, fish oil, liver, and multivitamins. It’s worth noting that research is constantly evolving, meaning we’re always learning more about which supplements are genuinely unhelpful – or even helpful – when it comes to acne. It’s also important to remember that the overall risk depends on various individual factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and skin type.

If you are concerned about how supplements may influence your skin, here are some steps you can take to minimise your risk:

  • Consult a healthcare professional or dermatologist to help you develop a supplement regimen suitable for your unique needs and based on the most updated research
  • Monitor your reaction to new supplements and seek support if you notice an increase in acne breakouts
  • Practise healthy skin habits such as regularly washing your face, avoiding touching or picking, and using gentle skincare products
  • Maintain a balanced and nutrient-dense diet, helping to prevent deficiencies and reduce the need for supplements
