What are injections for anti-wrinkle treatment?

Anti-wrinkle injections – the Botulinum toxin – and most commonly known to the public as Botox, contains a protein which is the essential part of how it acts to eliminate wrinkles.

At Linia Skin Clinic, our qualified dermatologists provide this treatment. For more information or to book your consultation now, contact us or fill out the enquiry form on this page.

This protein is absorbed into the area that it is injected and transported by the nerve down to its ending. Once there, the protein in botox blocks the chemical that is responsible for your facial muscle contractions.

As a result of this, your skin also relaxes and smooths out, giving you a more youthful look free of frown lines.

The treatment is gentle lasting from 3-6 months and prevents those annoying fine lines which gives our age away.

Which Areas of my Face Can I Get Anti Wrinkle Treatment?

The areas our wrinkle botox treatment works best include:

  •  Forehead
  • Area between the eyebrows
  • Around the eyes
  • Bunny lines
  • Upper lip
  • Angle of mouth
  • Jaw line
  • Chin
  • Neckline

When should you get anti wrinkle injections?

As father time naturally catches up with us, skin naturally loses collagen and elasticity which in turn makes it look loose and lifeless.

Over time, as facial muscles continually contract, your face can begin to also show signs of tension and lines.

The degree that this affects the individual depends on many factors such as:

  • Genetics
  • Frequency of facial expression changes
  • Lifestyle; smokers and regular alcohol consumers have reduced skin recovery
  • Frequency and severity of sun exposure
  • Stress

At LINIA Skin Clinic in Harley Street, London, we use botox anti-wrinkle injections to relax the muscles in the face and make fine lines disappear, giving you a younger, more youthful complexion.

Will Botox work for the wrinkles on around my face?

While botox is very effective at treating dynamic wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, forehead and neck, it does not work for deep ‘static’ lines.

The difference between static lines and dynamic lines is that you will see static lines when your face is at rest.

Dynamic lines only appear during facial expressions such as frowning, smiling or surprise. This is because muscle contractions are causing them to appear, where as static lines appear as a result of skin that has become loose.

For static lines, you may be recommended dermal fillers like Juvederm instead, or in combination with botox injections.

Are there any side effects of Botox wrinkle treatments?

Botulinum has been used for a very, very long time. While, it’s most well-known for its cosmetic uses these days, it didn’t start there.

It was first identified in the 1970’s from the clostridium botulinum bacteria and was originally used to treat an ailment called strabismus; a spasm problem with the muscles of the eye.

It was actually used safely at much higher doses than is currently used for cosmetic anti wrinkle treatments. Doctors at the time were amazed by the lack of fine lines in patients soon after injection and so began its use as an aesthetic aid.

The most common side effect is bruising, tenderness and/or itching of the area the treatment was administered. This usually subsides within hours or at most, 7 days.

It’s generally very safe in the minimal doses used for anti wrinkle procedures and there aren’t any reports of long-term negative side effects. The body simply breaks down and removes the chemical naturally on its own.

The only rare issue for long-term users is the possibility of developing antibodies that neutralise the Botox. Just like your body develops antibodies to colds or antibiotics, the same can happen for this chemical.

As with anything, if you notice anything wrong and aren’t sure, we are happy to provide aftercare to all of our patients.

What happens during my consultation for Botox treatment?

During your consultation, our qualified dermatologist will answer all of your questions and ask you some questions in return about your expectations and medical history.

This will help in determining whether you are suitable for this anti-wrinkle treatment. You’ll be taken through every aspect of the procedure to ensure your comfort.

If you’re both agreed that it’s the treatment for you, then you can be out of our skin clinic in a few hours, well on your way to a smoother, more youthful face!

What happens during the botox injection treatment?

Congratulations – you’ve decided to go for it. You’ll be taken to the treatment room and prepared for the procedure. The size of the area you’re getting treated and the number of fine lines will reflect how many injections are needed.

The botox anti wrinkle treatment will be administered through a very fine needle. While, this sounds harrowing, bear in mind that the injections will not go deeper than 2-3mm beneath the skin.

As well as a small burning sensation that some patients may feel, you may notice areas that look slightly bumpy initially. This side effect takes a few minutes to settle in most cases and is nothing to worry about.

The treatment itself takes only 5-15 minutes which means you can be in, out and go about your day in very little time.

How long does it take for anti wrinkle injections to work?

Results aren’t instant, but people generally notice something after 72 hours, especially if you’ve had the treatment around your crow’s feet area near the eyes.

However, it generally takes around 7-10 days to see the full effect of the anti wrinkle injections. By this time you’ll feel that the skin on your face is looking tighter and more youthful.

First-timers may be asked to return in a few weeks for the dermatologist to assess the result and your response.

Initially, a lower dose may be suggested as a tester. Your consultant will walk you through all of your options so you can choose the regime you’re most comfortable with

Do anti wrinkle injections hurt?

It really depends on the area treated, as some areas of the face are more sensitive than others.

Due to the very small size of each needle, pain varies from barely noticeable to a slight burning in some areas for a few minutes.

Patients often say that none of the injections “hurt-hurt” and it’s generally tolerated well by even those with a fear of needles.

How long is aftercare and recovery from a Botox injection?

Most people tolerate anti wrinkle injections well, with minimal down time. Some patients bruise minimally, but this goes away in a matter of days and is easily hidden with make-up.

There are some considerations for a swift recovery:

  • Avoid strenuous activities like the gym for a few hours
  • As your treatment area will be sensitive, avoid any extreme sun exposure while your skin is tender or swollen
  • It’s recommended you stay upright for a few hours after treatment.
  • Avoid situations that may rub against or put pressure on the area treated for a few hours (i.e. taking a nap or wearing a bike helmet)
  • Do not get a facial skin treatment in combination with your anti wrinkle injections i.e. lasers, peels or dermabrasion. The area may be sensitive for a few days.
  • Use an over the counter painkiller can be used if you feel any pain or tenderness.

Your qualified dermatologist at Linia Skin will take you through anything you’re unsure about and answer all of your questions.

How long do anti wrinkle injections last?

Your results will typically last around 3 to 4 months, with most patients returning after this period to be treated again.

This is because your facial muscles (or whichever muscles were treated) will eventually break the injection down over this time period and regain their function i.e create movement in the areas of your face that produce lines.

However, there tends to be a ‘compounding’ effect with each consecutive treatment where results last longer and longer. Some patients report that eventually they’re permanently free of facial, neck and/or jowl lines and wrinkles.

Anti wrinkle injections vs Dermal fillers

This is a bit of a misnomer since dermal fillers also fulfil the aim of being an anti wrinkle injection. But when most people talk about wrinkle injections, they’re usually referring to Botox.
While there are some similarities, there are also key differences between the two chemicals.

Let’s start with the similarities. Both are a naturally occuring chemical which is injected. Both procedures require injection with fine needles, are similarly quick, non-invasive and cause minimal pain. The procedures both look similar to the naked eye.

However, they almost work in opposing ways. Where Botox injections aim to decrease the ‘volume’ of your muscles by relaxing them, dermal fillers like Juvederm are used for static lines which are caused by loose skin and a lack of volume.

As we age, our skin loses elasticity, becomes thinner and looser. Fillers look to put that reduced volume back into the skin which stretches and firms the skin again. Fillers can also be used to add to or enhance other facial features, where Botox can’t.

Dermal fillers use the naturally occurring Hyaluronic Acid to put back into the skin what was lost with age. Sometimes one is more suitable than the other, or they’re used in combination to provide complete skin rejuvenation.
