What is Rosacea & How to cope with it

Many people throughout the world suffer from the condition known as rosacea, a condition that most often affects the skin of the face and neck – usually heavily affecting the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin. The team at LINIA Skin Clinic comes across cases of rosacea on a regular basis – so take a look at their simple guide to recognising and dealing with the condition.

How do I know if I have it?

If an area of your face often becomes red and inflamed, this could be a sign of rosacea or another kind of rash. The easiest way to determine this is to feel the affected area and see if it feels warm to the touch and if it stings – as this is often the case with rosacea. It is also a recurring condition, so this diagnosis is most likely if you’ve had it before. Rosacea is most common in women, but can occur to a more extreme degree in men – and, in the worst cases, can lead to a condition called rhinophyma, which is a severe swelling and redness of the nose.

How will it affect my day to day life?

You may simply find that the affected areas of the skin are swollen and painful, but rosacea can also cause unpleasant pimples and dilated blood vessels. The condition does not usually cause lasting damage unless it develops into rhinophyma, although it may affect your self-esteem.

Can I catch it?

The cause of rosacea is unknown, though if you have a family history of the condition then you are more likely to develop it. It may become worse if you eat spicy food or drink alcohol, expose your body to too much heat or sunlight, partake in vigorous exercise, go out in the cold, are experiencing menopause or psychological stress, or if you use steroid cream.

Can I cure it?

There is currently no known cure – however, the condition can be managed to an excellent degree through the use of topical creams, facials and peels, orally ingested antibiotics and even laser treatment.
